Your role

The ASI Assessor, based in South America (e.g., Chile), is responsible for planning, performing and following-up on ASI assessments to applicant and accredited CABs in relation to ASC Farm certifications conducted in accordance with the requirements of the ASC certification program.

Assessors play an essential role in ensuring the robustness and credibility of the ASC program by evaluating the conformance of CABs. The position provides an opportunity for intellectually challenging and stimulating work on a variety of global fisheries and aquaculture industry assessments.

Your core responsibility will be to carry out assessments in a number of ways. This involves undertaking audits of CABs against ASC Farm requirements by onsite inspections of CABs' records, systems and documents, by desk review, by witnessing farm audits, conducting compliance assessments at farm level and by monitoring traceability.

The main tasks are:

•    Communicating on a daily basis with ASC accredited and applicant CABs.
•    Creating and maintaining strong and trusting relations with CABs so that problems can be quickly and easily resolved.
•    Planning and performing accreditation and surveillance assessments, primarily in South America, but also in North America and occasionally, worldwide.
•    Preparing assessment reports and following up on nonconformities according to accreditation standards and ASI procedures.
•    Communicating internally with the ASC Program Manager & Program Officer.
•    Commenting on policy and procedure development processes as necessary.
•    Providing technical support on issues relating to incidents, complaints and appeals.

What you bring

Our ideal candidate brings a combination of knowledge, skills and experience:

•    Professionalism: Expert knowledge in aquaculture farming, preferably for species covered by ASC standards, accreditation and/or certification (auditing) is essential. Additional experience in relation to seafood processing is an asset.
•    Communication skills: Both oral and written in Spanish and English.
•    Organisational skills: Excellent personal organisational and work planning skills, demonstrating high productivity and ability to manage competing work priorities; high personal and work ethics; and a successful record of project development and management. Solutions-oriented approach to working with clients and within the team. Proven ability to plan and organize work independently and meet deadlines.
•    Interpersonal skills: Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Ability to work successfully as part of a team is essential. Dealing effectively with the auditing role and remain professional when there are complaints and/or conflicts of interest.
•    Auditing and Analytical Skills: Application of quality-related methods and techniques including quality management tools, social responsibility and environmental management methods and techniques. Well-developed analytical and systematic problem-solving skills, demonstrating sound reasoning abilities and logical decision-making.
•    Advanced computer skills: Use of standard MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat) and Google applications. Proficient and competent use of electronic information systems and databases.
•    Relationship Management: Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with the auditing role and remain professional when there are complaints and/or conflicts of interest. Ability to work in the international arena, and deal with other international organisations. A significant amount of international travel is required.
•    Education: Advanced university degree in aquaculture or other related degree. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and extensive professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
•    Experience: 3 or more years of professional work experience in aquaculture. Previous work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment is desirable
•    Qualification: Background knowledge in quality and/or environmental management systems (ISO 9000, ISO 14000) is recommended. ISO Lead Assessor qualification or equivalent preferred (but not a must).
