Internship Geotechnical Studies and Flood Protection
Myanmar is a South East Asian country that faces many water related challenges due to untamed rivers, extreme droughts, heavy rainy seasons and rapid urbanization. Arcadis works with a small team in Myanmar on water related project towards a more sustainable water management for the close and long-term future. With this internship, you will become part of this small team to support in various types of projects. Due to the small size of the team, you will get many different opportunities to work on rather than one major task. The primairy themes of the internship are flood risk management and data collection planning, but are not limited to GIS modelling/mapping, data analysis, desk research, writing reports. Your main research project will include geotechnical modelling and remote sensing activities to assess existing flood protection structures in the Ayeyarwady Delta. In the beginning of the internship, you will develop more detailed activities and objectives for the internship together with your supervisor and will be reported and monitord in a personal development plan.
Besides becoming part of the Arcadis Myanmar team, you will be part of the Dutch advisory group “Flood Protection”. The group advises clients - such as water boards - on dike safety, designs for improvements and all different kinds of challenges that come with it. During the internship you will also become part of the advisory group Flood Protection in The Netherlands to broaden your experience in flood protection and geotechnical engineering. Digitalization and innovation are key topics of the advisory group. You will be involved in some state-of-the-art embankment monitoring initiatives, of which the tasks will be determined at start of the internship.
Example of Arcadis’ projects in Myanmar
Arcadis has recently finalized the Regional Water Security Study, giving a great example for projects in Myanmar. With the support of a hydrodynamical model, the regional river system surrounding Yangon City have been analyzed to determine floods- and water supply challenges. These analyses made clear where more flood protection, more drinking water or improved water management and drainage is required. Three water security programs built up on these results, which include prioritize measures to mitigate each of the water security challenges. For this internship, the flood protection program in particular is relevant and could be used to formulate internship’s research.
The duration of the internship is 30 ECTS.
