Job Description

Description:

  • A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Coastal Ecosystem Processes lab (https://www.harteresearchinstitute.org/research/coastal-ecosystem-processes) at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies.  The primary obligations for the postdoctoral researcher will be to: 1) analyze and publish data from ongoing phytoplankton/water quality sampling efforts in Baffin Bay, Texas, and 2) assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of a phytoplankton(HAB)/water quality sensor network in Baffin Bay and possibly other estuarine locations.  Baffin Bay is considered to be the “jewel” of the Texas coast, but is undergoing eutrophication and deterioration of overall ecosystem health.  Since 1989, recurring, prolonged blooms of Aureoumbra lagunensis (“brown tide”) have occurred in the system.
  • A stakeholder group has identified several significant funding sources that will allow for watershed nutrient load reduction efforts to commence in the next few years. In response, we are seeking to build out a sensor-based monitoring network to complement an ongoing 8+ year phytoplankton/water quality sampling program that my lab runs. Opportunities also exist for participation in ongoing HAB/phytoplankton studies in other Texas estuaries as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and publish data from ongoing sampling efforts in Baffin Bay, Texas, and estuaries of the region.
  • Assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of a phytoplankton/water quality sensor network in Baffin Bay, Texas, and possibly in other estuarine locations.
  • Collaborate with other members of the lab group, and mentor undergraduate/early career graduate students in the lab.
  • Develop and seek funding for new avenues of research related to the goals of the Coastal Ecosystem Processes group.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research results at public meetings and national/international meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Marine Science or related field.
  • Experience with phytoplankton taxonomy, preferably including estuarine/coastal taxa.
  • Experience with statistical tools for analysis of ecological communities and time-series.
  • Experience with project management and ability to meet project goals in a timely manner.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience communicating scientific findings to a broad audience.
  • Desire to work with a broad spectrum of collaborators, managers, and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of experience with phytoplankton taxonomy, preferably including estuarine/coastal taxa.
  • Experience with automated sensor-based approaches for characterizing phytoplankton communities and water quality conditions.
  • Experience in boating.

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
