Objective and Purpose of the Assignment

 
 

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Ventures Facility is a planned multi-donor trust fund that will
contribute towards the sustainable development goals by deploying and scaling technology-enabled
business models for impact throughout the developing Asia-Pacific. The TRTA is designing and
operationalizing the Facility.

Relevant to this assignment, the TRTA is piloting an “Impact Labs” model for identifying technology-
enabled business models with (i) high potential to scale across the developing Asia-Pacific and (ii)
high potential SDG impact, particularly on climate, financial inclusion, and gender.

The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate an Impact Lab in the water industry (Water Lab Asia).
The key outputs of the assignment will be selection of at least ten (10) participating startups, design
and management of one (1) in-country startup training and showcase event, and ongoing startup support to
enable two (2) signed pilot/proof-of-concept agreements between participating technology companies and
end-users.

The position will be based in Home Office. The consultant will report to Dominic Mellor, Senior
Investment Specialist.

Scope of Work

 
 

The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:

● Facilitate a global call for water technology startups targeting markets in South and Southeast Asia;
● Design and implement an online application and evaluation process for selection of up to ten (10)
participating companies;
● Support acceleration activities to support startup decision making and regional market understanding
in South and Southeast Asia;
● Facilitate a process that matches municipal and industrial end-users with participating companies,
with the key output being high-potential, high-SDG impact pilot and proof of concept (POC) opportunities;
● Serve as a startup advisor for participating companies on topics including but not limited to business
model design, go-to-market strategy, regional customer and investor introductions, and fundraising in
order to support deployment and scale in the region.

Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output

 
 

(i) Design and manage a Batch 1 acceleration program for 10 early stage companies with solutions for the
water industry, including sourcing and outreach, application portal design and management, evaluation
and selection, in-country and virtual startup support activities.
(ii) Provide mentorship and market connections to participating companies in order to facilitate at
least 5 potential proof-of-concept/pilot opportunities and 2 companies to be validated by ADB as having
technology solutions for climate impact in ADB developing member countries.
(iii) Facilitate ongoing early stage company introductions to ADB, as well as dedicated startup
consultations for ADB.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

 
 

Master’s Degree in Business Administration or related discipline. At least 4 years of experience
accelerating startup innovation and an understanding of the nexus connecting large corporations, venture
capital investors, and early stage technology companies.
At least 4 years of experience in the water technology sector.
