Internship water security measures
Cities in Asia are growing and developing fast, Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, is one of those cities in transition. The effects of rapid urbanization and the impacts of climate change are increasingly visible. The trends associated with urbanization and climate change challenge cities worldwide to cope with future shocks and stresses. Integral part of the new strategy of Arcadis is a focus on sustainable and resilient cities. Arcadis develops and implements resiliency strategies for vulnerable cities.
Previous work has been focused mostly on Resilient Cities in relation to water. The aim is to broaden this to Resilient Cities in general and to work on flood risk aspects in the urban environment. The challenge is to integrate the components and expertise of the different divisions of Arcadis as a Global consultancy firm (Building, Infrastructure and Water & Environment) into this concept. Recently Arcadis got awarded a project to develop a Regional Water Security Study for the Greater Yangon region, to model water availability, coastal and riverine floods and so on, but also to be able to test potential measures to control the water in the area.
The role of the intern is diverse and requires a pro-active, flexible and open-minded attitude. The internship includes conducting diverse studies related to data collection, field surveys and measurements, Delft3D Modelling (if interested), GIS mapping, assessment of water security measures, writing reports, desk research, networking, business development and organization of events. When possible you will be involved in other relevant project activities as well on an Ad-Hoc basis like Environmental Social Impact Assessments and training activities, to get a good understanding of the work of Arcadis as a consultant. Your main focus will be one assessing interventions (engineering, hydrological, environmental and if interested socio-economic aspects) in Greater Yangon for the Regional Water Security Study, but as the office in Yangon is small (8 persons) you will be involved in other projects and activities regularly.
