The National Park Service – Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers program manages nationally designated rivers in partnership with local governments, councils, watershed groups, and non-governmental organizations. The Communications Fellow will research stories, interview individuals and travel to prepare stories, visual materials, and other communication content for a Partnership Rivers newsletter. The Fellow is encouraged to bring creativity, research skills, and interest in river conservation and community partnerships to this position.
The Communications Fellow will participate as a member of the Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers team that will collaborate to plan and strategize stories and will work to ensure quality and accuracy in all communications. The Communications Fellow will also work to identify new audiences and community interests for Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers stories and outreach. The Fellow will spend the majority of their time being self-directed and working independently to complete complex tasks such as interviewing, writing and assembling stories and communicating with individual nonprofit and NPS partners on each Partnership Wild and Scenic River. The Fellow must be able to prioritize their time given multiple work assignments, meet agreed-upon deadlines, and be organized in their work.
The Communications Fellow will also have the opportunity to work in partnership with a designated Partnership River to research and synthesize communications needs at a river-level. The Communication Fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with NPS staff and to travel to various project sites in the course of their work. A valid driver’s license is encouraged, but not required.
Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development. Fellows will coordinate and participate in Latino Conservation Week 2020, scheduled during mid-July.
The ideal candidate:
- is proficient in and enjoys writing and communicating clearly;
- has confidence in their ability to conduct successful interviews of a diversity of individuals;
- is able to listen, ask questions, synthesize and transform conversations resulting from the interviews into stories;
- is skilled in collaborating and partnering with diverse teams;
- is able to develop and share outreach materials, such as newsletters and electronic media with a variety of stakeholders and audiences;
- is a self-starter, able to create and follow-through on a work plan;
- has a working interest in how equity interplays with conservation and how communities protect their lands and waters.
- Age under 30 y.o. as of January 2020 (up to 35 for veterans)
- Open to a variety of Bachelors or Masters degrees and recent grads with strong writing and research skills; relevant coursework or degree might include Communications, Journalism, Recreation and Conservation Planning, Environmental Studies, or similar majors
- US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
- Available to work full-time (40 hours per week)
Stipend + Benefits:
- Weekly stipend of $480 based on a 40-hour work-week* ($12/hourly)
- Monthly housing stipend up to $400
- Travel expenses paid – roundtrip travel to and from internship location (up to budget limits)
- Health insurance coverage for the11-month term (medical insurance with Cigna available)
- Travel expenses paid to participate in HAF Cohort Conference (date TBC)
- Up to $700 for professional development support (aligned with role and goals)
- Public Land Corp Eligibility – after completing 960 hours, PLC status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for federal positions.
*Fellows are hired as contractors, taxes will not be withheld from stipends. Fellows will be provided a 1099-MISC form for tax purposes.

The National Park Service Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers program professionals partner with partners with community groups, nonprofits, tribes, and state and local governments to protect and enhance rivers. Staff members are located in the Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern U.S.
Partnership Rivers are managed by locally-driven, collaborative planning between local, state and regional stakeholders and the National Park Service (NPS). The National Park Service (NPS) works in partnership with local governments, committees and non-governmental organizations to protect communities’ own outstanding rivers and river-related resources. Partnership Rivers and the land surrounding them benefit from the hundreds of committed people contributing thousands of their volunteer hours and donating professional and other in-kind services to protect, manage and enhance recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, and cultural river resources.
The work site is in a historic National Park Service office building is located in downtown Boston financial district, near Faneuil Hall. The building is within 2 blocks of multiple metro stops. It houses many of the Boston area National Park Service staff. Other Fellows and interns will likely be in the immediate office building from other NPS offices; immediate staff includes a small core group. Housing in the Boston area is quite expensive, so for personal budgeting purposes, the provided housing stipend should not be considered as adequate by itself; resourcefulness, flexibility, and effort will be required to secure acceptable, affordable housing.
