Job description  

Almost every aspect of modern life is touched by the environmental permits we determine here in the National Permitting Service (NPS).

We are looking for a Team Leader to join NPS in Sapphire East, Solihull (moving to Birmingham in early 2020). You will lead a team that delivers environmental permits to strict time, cost and quality targets. Doing this while providing great customer service is at the heart of what we do here in NPS so your ability to drive a strong customer service ethos in your team will be crucial. You’ll need to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners as we don’t deliver permits in isolation. You will motivate the team to make risk based decisions and deliver results. You will plan, monitor and control resources to maximise their effective use to deliver team and departmental obligations. You will support team members through their development (technical and personal skills) and changes in processes.

The team  

The National Permitting Service consists of 450 staff working across a broad range of environmental permits and licenses. You will lead a team that determine Water Resources applications and will be supported by the Permitting Manager (your line manager) and Senior Permitting Officer. As one of 6 team leaders in NPS Solihull you will provide collaborate across the centre and support each other on a day to day basis.

Experience/skills required  

You will need to be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:
• The ability and experience to lead and support group of people and motivate them to deliver results
• Well developed customer and influencing skills
• Good work planning skills, able to handle multiple priorities and deliver to tight timescales
• Excellent communication skills
• Good judgement, problem solving and decision making skills
• A broad knowledge of Environment Agency duties and responsibilities
• The ability to work collaboratively with people throughout the organisation

Previous line management experience, knowledge of the environmental permitting process, the work of NPS and of Water Resources activities is desirable but not essential.
