NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's marine and freshwater resources, to provide understanding of climate and atmospheric state and processes, and increase resilience to weather and climate-related hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

We are seeking an early career scientist to undertake application and development of coupled hydraulic and sediment-transport modelling of river channels. This is a two-year fixed term position to assist with morphological modelling research into the effects of alternative river management approaches on bedload transport mechanisms and the implications for flood risk.

The position may also involve contributing to other commercial and research projects within NIWA, such as providing solutions to clients wanting to know the environmental effects of water-use and gravel-use schemes on river channels.

As our ideal candidate, you will have experience applying 1-D and 2-D morphodynamic models and analysing model output data, and experience processing topography datasets using remotely sensed (e.g. LiDAR) field data. You will have experience in undertaking and sometimes leading the collection and processing of data from field work and also contributing to the development, optimisation, porting and maintenance of scientific models, software or database products. Experience of consultancy work would be an advantage.

If you meet these criteria and are a positive team player, with highly developed written and verbal communication skills and a proactive, problem-solving attitude, we look forward to receiving your application.
