Post-Doctoral Scholar in Estuarine Plastics Modeling
A Post-Doctoral Scholar position is available at The Pennsylvania State University to study the transport and fate of plastics in the Chesapeake Bay using numerical models and to collaborate with experimentalists. The Post-Doctoral Scholar will work with an interdisciplinary team at two institutions (Penn State and The Virginia Institute of Marine Science) with expertise in numerical modeling, marine science, ecology, and materials science. The overall goals of the research are to develop a model to gain insights into the transport of plastics (particularly microplastics) in the Chesapeake Bay, provide input into developing an environmental standard for microplastics that is protective of living resources in the Chesapeake Bay, and to set a biodegradability target that will serve as both a certification standard and a driver of materials innovation. The Post-Doctoral Scholar will have the opportunity to develop skills in the development and teaching of an undergraduate course on plastics in the environment in collaboration with Penn State faculty and outside scientists. The final candidate for the position must have a Ph.D. in oceanography or a related discipline at the time of hire. Experience running 3-D hydrodynamic models (in lakes, estuaries, or oceans), and interests in interdisciplinary research and plastics pollution is highly desired. This is a fixed-term position, funded for one year from the date of hire. Funding is available for 6 additional months with the possibility of further extension.
