Assistant professor in Hydraulics of Urban Water Systems
The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (www.tudelft.nl/ceg) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.
The Department of Water Management (www.tudelft.nl/ceg/wm) focuses on wide range of issues across the full water cycle. The objectives of the research are to understand water availability and water use, as well as water quality, treatment and transport, and to translate this knowledge into practical technologies and methods. In 2018, an external research assessment committee rated the department of Water Management as ‘excellent’ on all three topics reviewed: quality of research, viability and societal relevance. The department currently has 30 FTE academics (tenured) and over 100 PhD students and postdocs. The current portfolio of Dutch, EU, industrial and other research projects is worth 28 million €. The research of Sanitary Engineering section (where the successful candidate will be located) addresses a wide range of topics across the urban water cycle including water extraction, storage, purification and distribution; wastewater and storm water collection, transport, treatment and discharge; resource recovery from water; industrial water; urban water management and drainage. The Department of Water Management is actively looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic (Tenure-Track) Assistant Professor in the field of hydraulics of urban water systems to contribute to our research, education and other activities, starting at the beginning of 2020.
The key job responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
• Research: Delivering high quality, internationally leading research in the field of hydraulics, fluid mechanics and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applied to urban water systems. The fundamentals of pressurised and free-surface flow hydraulics are essential, especially related to sediment transport, flow of non-Newtonian fluids and hydraulic transients that form the basis of innovative solutions in urban drainage and water supply networks. Candidates with expertise and experience in related numerical modelling and/or experimental work with associated measurement methods will be considered. The potential research areas include but are not limited to: sediment accumulation / erosion and multi-phase flow in innovative urban drainage infrastructure; optimal heat and mass flow in joint urban conduits, pipeline condition assessment using hydraulic transients. Co-supervising PhD and MSc students and bringing them to a successful completion and disseminating research outcomes effectively via internationally leading journals and conferences is integral part of the job.
• Education: Organizing, initiating and contributing to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses (the latter in our MSc‐track Water Management). Supervising BSc and MSc students, preparing and assessing student projects, assignments and exam papers and sharing the workload in the group.
• Valorization: Initiating projects and obtaining funding for new research and/or education projects. We encourage proactive engagement with both government and private sectors, i.e. industry, business and community partners to deliver the impact.
• Organization: Contributing to organizational / administrative activities and committees within the Department of Water Management and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.
The successful candidate: (i) holds a PhD or equivalent degree in civil or mechanical engineering, applied mathematics/physics or a related field of science / engineering; (ii) has proven ability to deliver high quality research as evidenced in the publications record; (iii) possess a good understanding of the higher education environment including diversity and inclusivity values; (iv) has the capacity to communicate effectively with peers, students and stakeholders.

Conditions of employment
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive a start-up package and formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
