The overall purpose of the job

The Communications Intern sits within the global office Communications and Advocacy team. They contribute to the overall mission of Wetlands International to sustain and restore wetlands, their resources and biodiversity by providing valuable support to the Advocacy and Communications team.

They will be responsible for a number of communications areas including the coordination of monthly internal and external newsletters, and will support with brand guardianship, social media, general coordination for the department as well as supporting the head of communications and advocacy on whole-organisation campaigns and projects.

This internship offers a great opportunity for someone looking to gain work experience in environmental/development communications with a highly respected international organisation. There is also the opportunity to learn more about international development, conservation and scientific work. There may be domestic travel (which Wetlands International will cover), opportunities for skills development, attendance at external meetings and to participate in Wetlands International’s lively workplace culture.

They will finish the internship with a good understanding of 360-degree communications and strategy, as well as practical experience with communications skills. There is also benefit from widespread exposure to Wetlands International’s work, networks and staff.

Responsibilities and tasks

The Communications Intern will work predominantly at the global level, supporting with the newsletter, internal communications and brand and contributing to the development of communications materials in all relevant forms, including print and online, e.g., website content, social media and newsletters. The role will also provide support where necessary in development of presentations, imagery, leaflets and other communications materials for external events, outreach and public consultations. They will also support in events organization where necessary. As the intern grows and develops, there may be opportunity to take on responsibility for the communications planning for smaller projects towards the latter part of the internship.

Internal communications

  • Help the design and development of an internal communications channel e.g. newsletter
  • Coordination of content and management of channel
  • Research and analysis into improvement of existing shared channels between the global office and our offices around the international network
  • Keeping stakeholders such as donors up to date with communications activity and news from around the network

Newsletter

  • Support with a redesign of our monthly, public-facing newsletter
  • Coordinate and schedule the monthly newsletter working with the Communications Officers on social media and content, and communications colleagues around the international network of offices
  • Maintain Mailchimp lists and manage Mailchimp account
  • Reporting and analysis to help optimize the newsletter performance and provide insights for the Advocacy and Communications Team

Brand and Visual Assets

  • Provide brand support for the network by being the contact point for brand guidelines, logos and high-res imagery
  • Lead on the development of the photo library project
  • Support where necessary in development of presentations, imagery, leaflets and other communications materials for external events, outreach and public consultations.

 Advocacy and Communications Coordination

  •  Support in events organization where necessary.
  • Support the head of communications and advocacy in project coordination for whole-organisation campaigns 

Working relations

  • INSIDE Wetlands International – head office and network offices:
  • CEO, Director of Operations and Network development, Programme Heads, Communications and Advocacy staff and other technical and operations staff; Heads of Office and technical staff from network offices, Associate Experts.
  • OUTSIDE Wetlands International:
  • Designers, writers, editors, photographers, video makers, press agencies, printers, journalists, website specialists, website agencies, a wide range of other suppliers.

Essential education and experience

  • A relevant qualification (or working towards it) e.g. in communications, marketing, PR journalism, or equivalent commensurate professional skills/experience
  • Proven interest in environmental sciences, geography or international development
  • Sensitivity to cultures and international experience
  • Fluent level English speaker.
  • Experience of writing for different audiences
  • Experience and/or a good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience and/or a knowledge of Adobe Suite applications is preferred
