Director (Policy & Grant Management - Climate & Resilience)
The Rockefeller Foundation is seeking an experienced Director, Policy & Grant Management to join the Climate & Resilience team.
The Climate & Resilience team’s initial vision is to help to lead the development of market-changing innovations to increase the capital that flows towards the development and implementation of climate and resilience projects globally. The Director, Policy & Grant Management will work with the Managing Director (MD) and the Initiative team to develop the policy enabling environment that supports the team’s interventions as well as develop the relationship between the Initiative team and its portfolio of grantees.
Principal Roles & Responsibilities
- Partner with MD to support the development of, lead and manage the Climate & Resilience team’s policy & grant management function.
- Develop strategic recommendations for areas of policy focus through rigorous analysis and evaluation of the market gaps and develop partnerships to implement opportunities.
- Cultivate positive relationships and mutual trust with critical strategic players in government, the private sector, foundations, and NGOs in order to cultivate ownership and support for Climate & Resilience team’s work and proposed interventions, tools, and programmatic support.
- Routinely evaluate and communicate on approaches, adapting as needed to ensure the impact is being delivered.
- Work closely with the MD and the Climate & Resilience team to steward the active management of the portfolio of partnerships and grantees, including the Atlantic Council and other Climate & Resilience grantees.
- Ensure relationship is transparent, and that impact and content goals are being achieved against budget spend down.
- Develop the engagement strategy with the grantees and champion their efforts.
- Elevate new grant and PRI opportunities that align with the Climate & Resilience’s vision and mandate.
- Partner with the Managing Director and Director, Operations to support cross-functional efforts at the Foundation to leverage the Climate & Resilience team as the ‘resilience and climate’ partner and in support of outside partners and grantees.
- Partner with GP&A to understand gaps in advancing Climate & Resilience, engage in thought leadership and identify new opportunities for grants and investments.
- Assist with supporting the Foundation’s overall structure where stronger Climate & Resilience input can enhance impact, particular for Food, Power and Health to ensure resilience lens and maximize co-benefits.
- Support the development of and the ongoing management of the Climate & Resilience’s Advisory Council.
- Contribute to the ongoing monitoring and evaluation and impact needs of the Climate & Resilience team.
- Must be comfortable with 20-30% potential travel time.
Education, Experience and Skills
- At least 10 years of directly related working experience in climate and/or resilience.
- Strong commitment to and experience in combatting climate change and advancing resilience practice across diverse geographies and thematic areas.
- Experience and existing relationships with the key policy and financial actors in climate and resilience, as well as a high-level understanding of financial fund flows and the complexities of developing projects and executing in the climate adaptation and resilience space.
- Ability to take initiative, think creatively, problem-solve, work well under pressure, and manage multiple priorities and projects effectively under tight deadlines.
- Highly organized with attention to detail.
- Ability to establish priorities that align with a strategic plan; manage and deliver on multiple agendas and programs effectively.
- Deep experience in developing and managing relationships with complex, geographically diverse, global organizations of all sizes.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations, and across teams, with an ability to inspire trust and to motivate staff and partners.
- Proven project management skills, with an ability to work independently, under pressure, and coordinating effectively across multiple stakeholders, culturally and ethnically diverse environments, and a variety of projects in order to get things done.
- Demonstrated exceptional management and operational experience, including staff development, financial management, and team administration.
- Entrepreneurial and strategic mindset, with demonstrated experience leading work independently from strategy to execution, ensuring accountability for results along the way.
- Committed to using software and data to produce outputs, track outcomes and deliver results, independently and proactively.
- The ability to professionally and effectively represent the Climate & Resilience team and The Rockefeller Foundation across diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated passion for the mission of The Rockefeller Foundation.
- Fluency in English is required, and fluency with other languages is beneficial.
- Location: Position is based in New York, NY or Washington, D.C.

The Director reports to the Managing Director
The Director will manage a Senior Associate who will support the overall management of the Climate & Resilience grant portfolio.
