Water Quality Environmental Scientist

In Support of the SFWMD’s Water Quality Bureau

Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies (FAU/CES) is offering a full-time position to provide scientific support for the South Florida Water Management District’s New Works Water Quality Program. The position is based at the SFWMD Headquarters in West Palm Beach and will support permit reporting, technical editing, and provide water quality monitoring quality assurance support.

Water Quality Environmental Scientist - Description

The Environmental Scientist position’s responsibilities are primarily office-based, with occasional field trips to project sites that may include exposure to hot, humid, and wet conditions in areas occupied by animals such as alligators, snakes, and stinging/biting insects. The primary tasks include:

Task 1: Permit Reporting - prepare draft annual permit reports for the New Works project published annually in Volume III of the South Florida Environmental Report (SFER)

(https://www.sfwmd.gov/science-data/scientific-publications-sfer). Responsibilities include:

  • Statistical analysis, spreadsheets, report preparation, technical review, QA/QC, graphics,
  • Knowledge of reporting requirements specified in permits and consent orders;
  • Analysis of data for Compliance reports (including narrative, graphs, figures, tables, etc.)
  • Ability to prepare permit reports for New Works projects - C-111 Spreader Canal, A-1 FEB, Lakeside Ranch STA, and STA-1W STA Expansion.

Task 2: Technical Editing - assist the SFWMD editors in technical editing for SFER chapters; and

Task 3: Water Quality Monitoring Quality Assurance - assist the SFWMD Water Quality Monitoring Section’s Quality Assurance Officer with quality assurance duties such as creating a template for a field quality manual (QM) that satisfies the FDEP requirements.

Qualifications: Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, have strong oral and written communication skills and proven organizational, time, and self-management skills. Experience in water quality data analysis and permit reporting is required. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a Natural or Physical Science, or related field, and at least 2 years related work experience or Master’s Degree with permit reporting experience, is required.

Term: This is a full-time, benefited position with FAU requiring 40 hours per week and scheduled to start in February 2019. The salary is based upon experience ranging from $43,000 – $47,000 annually. It is a 2-year contract position with annual renewal based on performance and SFWMD funding.
