The Directorate General for Development and Cooperation is responsible for designing EU development policies and for the implementation of the
Commission's external aid instruments.

Within the Unit C2 "Environment, Natural Resources, Water", the Water Sector is responsible for:

• policy making in relation to water related issues in developing countries in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals;
• supporting global initiatives improving sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, including behaviour change and
hygiene education programmes, water saving techniques, waste water management, water quality and pollution;
• supporting initiatives for shared water resources among riparian countries through knowledge sharing and best practices for integrated water resources management at national and trans-boundary levels;
• supporting for water diplomacy and the water-energy-food nexus;
• managing the Water thematic networks and ensuring support to Communication and Visibility;
• draft thematic strategy papers, multi-annual and annual programming documents;
• ensure appropriate coordination with geographic Directorates, other thematic units, line DG’s, Member states and, where appropriate, with other donors;
• lead on the identification, formulation of specific actions to implement the programming documents;
• contribute to the preparation of the AAP and EU budget as well as to the budgetary process and procedures during the year of budget implementation;
• contribute, together with the competent financial/contractual unit, the Geographical Directorates and the Delegations, to the monitoring of and the reporting on contracting and payments;
• assist upon demand Delegations in Water sector policy dialogues.
